Clarke's Corner - Day 7&8 - May 7, 2010

Each day Braves goaltender Clarke Saunders will give you a run-down of what the Braves did the day before in Dauphin. Here's his first entry:

Day 7 – Game Four

Today started off as usual with breakfast at Smitty's. We all ate and headed to the rink for a morning skate. The guys had a 25 min practice, getting in a good sweat and firing a few pucks. We all headed to the hotel for some sleep and food.

After a few hours of rest and a good meal the guys got ready for a game against the only team we haven't played, the winners from Saskatchewan, LaRonge. Ironically enough their starting goalie got hurt as well and they brought in another goalie to replace him. The guys got ready doing our usual warmup, preparing for an opportunity to even our record to 2 and 2. The guys seemed ready to battle and compete.

Again the team fell behind early with the opposition scoring within the first two minutes of the game. But we stayed calm and confident, bouncing back wescored the next two goals, ending the first twenty minutes leading by one. The second period featured back and forth play with the braves scorining 1 and LaRonge scoring 2. We headed into the final twenty minutes even at 2, looking to finish the round robin with a hard final period. Giller must have said the right words to the guys, causing an explosion of three goals to earn our second victory and a berth against Vernon in the semi finals.

Key notes of the game were captain Thommy tallying three points, with Stockton and Dumond both grabbing two points. Doug Carr started in nets, earning player of the game for the Braves. An accomplishment to say the least with his last start coming over a month prior to yesterday.

The boys head into an off day to get some rest and get ready for a chance to gain a birth to play for the national championship for the first time in Braves history.

Day 7 - Off-day and Awards Banquet

Today was a relaxtion day for the most part. With some breakfast, a solid practice and a quick nap, filling up most of the morning and afternoon. We had our awards banquet where individually the braves were proudly recognized.

Scott Arnold took top forward and honors. Arny has had a great tourament, amazing the fans and other teams with his strength and speed. Arny also grabbed some cool cash to help pay for his college career, earning one of the handful of scholastic awards handed out.

Gilbert earned top goalie honors, being the unanomous vote within the teams. Gilby has beem outstanding again. Frustrating shooters and giving our team the best chance to win game after game. Congrats to both guys you deserve it!

The banquet finished and we headed back to the hotel, where we watched roughly thirty minutes of video. Giller had the guys watching a few things to work on to help inprove a team very close to playing some amazing hockey. All the talk ends tonight, leaving only our play on the ice left. Tomorrow will be a hard battle but we are ready to confront a tough opponent. For all who have access to watch online I strongly suggest to park your rear end at a computer and watch the boys play our best hockey yet!

Gilbert and Arnold win RBC Cup Award's - May 7, 2010
Sean Burns - Stats Courtesy Hockey Canada

Braves Goaltender Justin Gilbert continues his storybook run through tournament play by picking up the Top Goaltender Award at the RBC Cup National Junior A Championships. Gilbert, who was undefeated through 16 starts for the Braves this season has compiled a 2.68 GAA and .926 Save % while going 1-2 in the tournament. He has faced 109 shots in the tournament, allowing only 8 goals while leading the Braves (with help from Doug Carr in Game 4) to the fewest team goals against with 12.

Braves Left-winger Scott Arnold was named the RBC Cup's Top Forward. Arnold amassed 4 Goals and 2 Assists for 6 Points in 4 games. He picked up a hat-trick in the Braves 11-2 rout of the Oakville Blades and scored the pivotal short-handed goal on one of his trademark breakaways in the same game. Scott was also the recipient of the RBC Cup Legacy Scholarship for the Braves. This $500 Scholarship is presented to one graduating 20 year-old from each participating team.

Congratulations Justin and Scott and Good Luck to all the Braves in tomorrow's Semi-Final!!

DAY 6 – THURSDAY, MAY 6
Shayne Thompson (F) – Brockville Braves

The Braves captain (and Patrick Kane look-alike) was in on the goal all three times Brockville took the lead in its win over La Ronge, setting up Maxime Dumond to put the Braves ahead 2-1, scoring himself for a 3-2 advantage and assisting on Shayne Stockton’s game-winner midway through the third, helping Brockville wrap up third place and set up a Saturday semifinal date with Vernon. Thompson finished the round robin with seven points (four goals, three assists), tying him with the Dauphin duo of Shane Luke and Ryan Dreger for the tournament lead.

DAY 2 – SUNDAY, MAY 2
Scott Arnold (F) – Brockville Braves

It may have finished 11-2 in favour of the Braves, but Oakville had pulled to within a goal at 3-2 and was on the power play when Arnold stemmed the Blades’ momentum with a shorthanded goal, opening the floodgates and sparking a run of eight unanswered goals that helped Brockville score more goals than any RBC Cup game in the last 14 years and tie the all-time record for goals scored in a National Junior A Championship game. Arnold finished with three goals – all on special teams – and added two assists in Brockville’s first-ever RBC Cup win.

Clarke's Corner - Day 6 - May 5, 2010

Each day Braves goaltender Clarke Saunders will give you a run-down of what the Braves did the day before in Dauphin. Here's his first entry:

Day 6 – Game Three

Today started off with another delicious breakfast at good old Smitty's restaurant. After breaky we had a little time to relax and get a some rest. The guys all got ready, and rode the bus to the rink to prepare for another tough test. The oppponent was Vernon, a well rounded team with numerous forwards already heading to play Division 1 hockey next year. The boys warmed up and before you knew it the game was under way.

Yet again we were caught behind the eight-ball, killing off another 5 on 3 advantage for the opponent. The guys remained cool and confident, limiting the high powered Vipers to only one shot one net. Shayne Thompson scored a huge goal to give the boys a 1 0 lead following the big kill. The first period featured a bit of sloppy play on our part giving Vernon some good scoring chances but who would have guessed Gilby would stand on his head once again? Justin made numerous great saves giving the Braves a one goal lead after 20 minutes.

The second period was a great period for the guys. We peppered the Viper netminder, a back up for most of the season. Vernon decided to make a goalie change prior to the game and it seemed to work out. After a dominant period the boys were only able to manage to have a 2-0 lead thanks to Shayne Stockton poking a loose puck in off of an offensive outburst by Gingras.

The third was a different period and not a favourable change of fate. We were sloppy making some costly turnovers, while Gilbert continued his amazing play keeping our team in the game. Vernon got within striking distance with an unfortunate bounce to say the least. A puck struck the glass bobbling past Gilby. Vernon kept the pressure on the Braves, scoring on a play out front to tie the hockey game at two a piece. We didn't have much momentum and were unable to manage many high percentage scoring chances. The Vipers clinched the win with a goal in the last five minutes of regulation. Yet again a sloppy period was the factor in a loss. We did a lot of good things today but need to string three solid periods together.

A couple of positives to take from today; the play of Gilby, which earned him the player of the game for the Braves. Also Stephen Bird was in the lineup and stepped up playing a very solid game. We are close to playing some good hockey, but at this time of the year close isn't good enough. The boys believe in the room that we can all pull together and play our best hockey yet. We get a chance tomorrow to get rolling, a 7pm start againt LaRonge. Doug Carr will get his first start tomorrow.

THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK CLINCHES SECOND PLACE FOR VERNON

DAUPHIN, Man. – There will be no tiebreakers, no mathematical formulas for the Vernon Vipers at the 2010 RBC Cup.

Sahir Gill’s goal 1:14 into the third period kick-started a four-goal outburst for the Vipers that helped erase a 2-0 deficit after 40 minutes and led to a 4-2 victory over the Brockville Braves on Wednesday afternoon, clinching second spot in the round robin. That’s important because it means the defending champions will be the home team for their Saturday semifinal.

Knowing a win would help their quest ... More

Clarke's Corner - Day 4&5 - May 4, 2010

Each day Braves goaltender Clarke Saunders will give you a run-down of what the Braves did the day before in Dauphin. Here's his first entry:

Day 4 – Game Two

Another early morning and a stop at good old Smitty’s restaurant started off our day once again, with a nice pancake and egg breakfast. Basically right after breakfast we hopped on the bus and headed to the rink for a morning skate. The guys were on the ice for barely 20 minutes, only getting a sweat on while firing a few pucks on Justin and Douglas. Practice ended and we all headed back for the hotel, and then back to Smitty’s yet again, this time were served with some pasta. The food knocked most of the team out as they took a pre game nap.

We all woke up and headed to the rink for the second time today to get ready for the game. The boys were feeling good, loose and confident, but knowing that they would be facing a much tougher opponent.

The game started with a fast pace, Daughin delivering a few big hits. Gilbert was very sharp early, making many in-close saves. One of those chances Justin thought he had froze the puck, while the only person in the rink that knew he didn’t have it was one of the Daughin forwards who poked the loose puck in the net. The guys were thrown off guard a bit being down 1 0 for the second game in a row.

Shortly after, Daughin took a penalty. Shayne Thompson scored on a nice shot from the point, helped by a great screen in front. Teams traded chances with both goalies making key saves. That’s the way the period ended and we headed into the second period with a 1 1 tie.

The second period was probably one of the worst periods of hockey we have played in a long time. It didn’t help that the officiating was worse. The ref was making many calls that the Brockville fans didn’t appreciate. But you can’t blame a ref, and the end result was a sloppy period and a 3 1 deficit. One bright spot of the period was the play of Gilby, making many great saves and continuing his outstanding play.

Giller had the boys believing in themselves, and the start of the third period was a momentum shift in the right direction. Shayne Stockton scored on a great short within the first 30 seconds of the period to cut the lead in half. Unfortunately, as well as the boys played in the third, the end result was a 3 2 loss coming up one goal short. The second period was a killer for the team. We showed that our team is as good as any team in the tournament with our third period play and will have to build on that success.

On a side note Scott Arnold was robbed of a goal. Even the Daughin fans knew the puck was in but the ref believed the puck never crossed the line. Like I said earlier you have to play through adversity and cannot blame a loss on a ref. The team heads into an off day, with a fun day scheduled. The guys are all confident and ready for our upcoming game against the defending Champ Vernon Vipers.

Day 5 – Off-day

Well not too much to talk about today. Another early morning breakfast at Smitty’s started off the day. We had French toast today to change up the breakfast menu a little. The guys had early morning practice right after breakfast, working on some things for tomorrow’s game against Vernon.

Today’s main event was located at the local bowling alley, where the guys got to show off their skills. I'd just like to make a shout-out to my partner Scott Dawson, who helped out our two man team to win the event. The rookie showed off his amazing skills and bowled a team high 189. The losing team was followed by the low bowler of the day Max Dumond in a walk of shame back to the hotel. The team was shown a little skin on the way back which caused some tense moments at dinner. We all headed down to the local Steakhouse where the guys had some fun poking fun at Gingras' singing abilities and Boak’s awesome  story, which cannot be told over the internet. Giller had some fun with Dumond, scaring the living heck out of him and leading to a good old laugh for the boys.

Overall a pretty relaxing day, just having some fun and getting ready for a big game tomorrow. Let’s go boys!

Clarke's Corner - Day 2&3 - May 2, 2010

Each day Braves goaltender Clarke Saunders will give you a run-down of what the Braves did the day before in Dauphin. Here's his first entry:

Day 2 – Start of the Tourney

Today was much less tiring, no sleeping in airports and early morning cheese bus rides. We started off the day with an early breakfast at the  restaurant in our hotel.  We went and watched the first game of the tourney right after we were finished.  Oakville and LaRonge were the first two teams to play.

The game was a little slow to start off, but was exciting by the end. LaRonge ended taking the overtime victory, 3 2. We headed back to the hotel for lunch and a quick nap.  Before I it even felt like I closed my eyes we were back in the bus and heading back to the rink to watch the host team Dauphin play Vernon, the defending RBC champs. It was a much better game, the game had good flow, lots of good plays and big hits. The end result after another OT was a win for Dauphin - scoring from the blue line for a 6 5 win. We had an early curfew and were all in our rooms pretty early.  The guys are all ready to go for day 3 and our opening game against the Oakville Blades, GO BRAVES GO!

Day 3 – First Game

I woke early again and had breaky at 9 with the team, I'm starting to get used to this whole getting up early thing. We had a little time in between food and our bus leaving, so most of the guys took a quick nap while I headed down to the so-called workout room. All I ask for is a nice workout room and I was disappointed to say the least, but what can you do?

Anyway we got to the rink and started to get ready for the game. The guys were loose and confident before the game and it turned out they had reason to be. We started off the tourney down 5 on 3 early. Gilbert made some good saves, but we were down 1 0 by the end of the power play. Like I said earlier we had reason to be confident. Shortly after we were up 3-1, out-skating a bigger and slower opponent. That’s how the period ended with a two goal lead and basically all the momentum.

Oakville changed goalies and seemed to grab some momentum, scoring the first goal of the second period to make it 3-2. We got called on a weak penalty to say the least, and were back on our heels. Our penalty killers stepped up, with a inexperienced Scott Dawson up for the draw in our zone, he won it and dropped the puck to Scott Arnold. A couple strides later Arny had a breakaway and made a great shot to score a huge short-handed goal and give the team a 4-2 lead. Lets call that the TSN turning point, which lead to an explosion of  8 goals by the team.

Leading the charge today were Dave Roy, Zak Zaremba, and Scotty Arnold collecting 5 points each. The whole team had a great opening game, with great defense, very solid goaltending, and forwards who skated circles around the other team. So all and all a great win by the team, amassing an 11-2 win.

The rest of the day will be a rest period, getting ready for the game tomorrow night against a stronger Dauphin squad.

GO BRAVES GO!

Clarke's Corner - Day 1 - April 30, 2010

Each day Braves goaltender Clarke Saunders will give you a run-down of what the Braves did the day before in Dauphin. Here's his first entry:

Travel

We started off with a very early morning, leaving the Madhouse on Magedoma at 4:30 am to head to the Ottawa airport. For a few of the guys it was the first time flying, most of the team was giving the new guys a hard time about flying, making them a little anxious for takeoff and landing. After the one hour flight to Toronto we had a 2 hour layover, where we took up an entire gate sleeping. We then flew to Thunder Bay for a 30 minute wait when we were finally able to head to Winnipeg.

After landing in Winnipeg we had a 5 hour bus ride of very flat terrain. It was straight to the rink for opening ceremonies where we were welcomed with a warm ovation. The ceremony was great, including special effects, a performance by a local female county artist, and it was topped off by a Ukrainian dance team. The ceremony was short and sweet and before we knew it we were already back at the hotel. Shortly after, we were eating our much deserved dinner. The guys finished quickly and quicker then you can say GO BRAVES GO the guys were out like a light.

So all and all a very long day, and looking forward to getting the tournament started!

The Central Junior Hockey League has announced plans to incorporate progressive new policies and procedures designed to further enhance the league as the destination of choice for elite junior aged players from the region and beyond.

Beginning with a new look logo, and a name change to be known as the CENTRAL HOCKEY LEAGUE, as well as a classification designation better suited to current and future practices commonly known across North America as TIER 1, the CJHL will continue on an accelerated path to surpass the expectations of prospective players, parents, fans and higher levels of hockey that view this level as a key developmental stop on the way to the NCAA, Major Junior and various levels of professional hockey including the NHL.

BRAVES WIN FRED PAGE CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- April 25, 2010

Your Braves defeated the Lumber Kings 5-1 to win the Fred Page Cup!!!

Sunday afternoon at the Brockville Memorial Centre your Brockville Braves completed a perfect 4-0 run through the Fred Page Cup by winning a decisive 5-1 victory over their arch-rival Pembroke Lumber Kings. The game's high points included 2 short-handed goals in a 5 minute penalty kill and stellar goaltending by Justin Gilbert who could have easily been named Tournament MVP. The Braves got on the board in the first on a goal by hard-working Justin Taber. Early in the second Shayne Stockton rifled a shot under Zacharias to put the Braves up 2-0. Just past the 2:00 mark the Braves took what could have been a game-changing penalty when Nathan Slack was assessed a 5-minute major penalty for busting open Ahmed Mafhouz with a high-stick. But just as they have all season, the Braves penalty-kill was excellent and Scott Arnold and Stockton picked up short-handed goals while the Lumber Kings got nothing, allowing the Braves to remain perfect on the PK for the tournament. At the 11:30 mark Pembroke put their only goal on the board but the celebration was short-lived as Braves Captain Shayne Thompson's shot through the five-hole trickled across the goalline ending Scott Zacharias' night. The Braves played solidly through the rest off the game and celebrated as the first ever two-time Fred Page Cup Champions in front of a sold-out 1500+ crowd of the best fans in the CJHL.

The Braves would like to thank their fans for the support throughout this record breaking season and especially for the support of the Fred Page Cup with almost 9,000 fans attending the 8 games. But don't stop now, the boys head to Dauphin Manitoba to fight for the RBC Cup - Canadian National Junior 'A' Championship. Keep an eye on this site or join our Facebook Page for RBC Cup Updates May 1-9.

Braves Sweep Prelims - Head Straight to Final - April 24, 2010

Your Brockville Braves have swept the competition going 3-0 in the Preliminary portion of the 2010 Fred Page Cup. The Braves started off Wednesday night with a convincing 6-0 destruction of the MJAHL's Woodstock Slammers. The Memorial Centre was rockin as Shayne Stockton picked up a hat-trick and Thompson, Williamson and Zaremba chipped in too. Justin Gilbert was outstanding in his first start in almost a month, picking up shutout by turning away all 28 shots which bodes well for the Braves as the goaltender stepped in as the Braves starter replacing an injured Clarke Saunders.

Thursday night was the Bogart Cup Rematch. The CJHL Titans faced off in an action packed game with neither team giving an inch. Scotty Arnold got the Braves on the board early in the second, the Lumber Kings responded halfway through the period before Scott Dawson got the fans on their feet with a great goal off a rebound. Suprisingly for a Pembroke-Brockville matchup there were only three penalties called in the game.

Last night the Braves went for the sweep of the opening round as they took on Quebec's Terrebonne Cobras, who had taken mighty Pembroke to overtime on the opening night of the tourney. This hard hitting affair left the hometown, capacity crowd satisfied as the Braves picked up a decisive 5-2 victory over the Cobras on Alumni Night, which included at least 100 former Braves Alumni in the building. Arnold, Taber, Thompson and Slack scored for the Braves.

The win gives the Braves a bye into the Final Sunday afternoon (2PM) when the Braves will meet the winner of the Terrebonne(1-2)/Pembroke(2-1) Semi-Final tonight (7PM).

Congratulations to Todd Gill on being named Head Coach of Team Canada East for the second year in a row at the 2010 World Jr. A Challenge this November.

Gill had some success last year in his first international coaching experience but fell just short of the medals. In an article for Hockey Canada he said "Last year I enjoyed the experience and learned a lot, but did not achieve the goal we set out for our team," says Gill, who led Canada East to a fourth-place finish in 2009. "The experience I earned through competing at such a high level of international competition, and the knowledge I gained of the selection process and team building was invaluable."

One Man’s Take on the Brockville Braves- January 13, 2010
by Lorne Greer

The CJHL’s Brockville Braves are in the midst of an historic and special 2009-2010 campaign. They sit atop the league standings and have reeled off a league-record 25 wins in a row, obliterating the old league standard of 18. The team has several local players hailing from Brockville and surrounding area. The Braves are playing host to the Fred Page Cup this spring, the winner of which moves onto the Royal Bank Cup, emblematic of Canadian Tier II Junior A hockey supremacy.

All great news right? Yes, except that not enough people are sitting up and taking notice. Many people in Brockville are oblivious to the quality of the hockey in the CJHL, the talent of the local team, and the league and team records being shattered by the Braves.

Once I attended my first game, 2 years ago, I was instantly hooked. My 6 year old son and I attend all of the home games that we can manage during the regular season, do not miss a home playoff game and already have our ticket packages in hand for the Fred Page Cup. Even my wife, who is not a big hockey fan, attends some of the games with us (if we can find someone to look after our 2 year old), and enjoys being in the loop about the length of the winning streak, scores of the games and such.

My 6 year old can name every player along with their number and has all of the player cards, some of them signed by the players themselves. He outfits himself in a Braves cap and jersey for every home game and as soon as the buzzer sounds at the end of a home game, he is already asking when the next one will be taking place. In short, the Braves have given us something to talk about, something to do as a family and as transplanted non-locals, a sense of pride in our community.

I find the games much more entertaining and exciting than NHL games, though many will not agree with me on that point. As someone who receives many tickets for Senators games through work, I can say that I have turned down several opportunities to attend Sens games for free, if that happens to conflict with a Braves home game. I find that the NHL has changed too much for my liking since the 1980’s which contain my fondest memories of the league. While I will acknowledge that the skating, goaltending and shooting have improved, the passion level has not and that is what has turned me away from the NHL and towards the Braves.

It is precisely their passion level and obvious love for the game that has drawn my family towards the Braves. These are 16-20 year old kids playing at a very high level of hockey, led by longtime Toronto Maple Leaf (and San Jose Shark captain) Todd Gill. Gill is the owner and coach of the team, and has taken an already good franchise and made it into an elite one. The players are well coached, talented, enthusiastic, and their hard work and effort on the ice have made them the top team in the league this year, ahead of even the perennial powerhouse Pembroke Lumber Kings.

Both the players and coach Gill are very approachable off the ice and that is huge in a small community. These guys are heroes to my son, and the fact that they will get down on their knee, look him in the eye, shake his hand, sign his card and offer him some words of encouragement means the world to him.

This year’s edition has the right mix of chemistry, talent and hard word to go all the way to the Royal Bank Cup, and possibly bring home the hardware. The squad is currently ranked 10th in the country and probably should be a couple of notches higher than that. I’ll admit that after last season’s heartbreaking elimination at the hands of Pembroke, I thought the team might be in tough for their Fred Page Cup year, having lost league leading scorer and team captain Mike Byrd in addition to the league’s top defenceman, Paul Puglisi.

Gill immediately reloaded, bringing in a new captain in the form of fiery sniper Shayne Thompson to play on the top line with the big smooth center Shayne Stockton, and the underrated Mark Williamson. The 2nd to 4th lines are interchangeable. These lines are so good, they could easily be the top 1 or 2 lines on most teams in the league. Local boy Colin McLean centers a line with the fast and powerful fan favorite Scott Arnold, along with another Brockville lad, Mike “Moose” Skakum, whose blend of brawn and soft hands have resulted in a breakout year. The hard working and physical play of Nathan Slack sets the tone for the next unit which is rounded out by highly touted wingers David Roy and Maxime Dumond, both on the NHL watch list. The other line features speedy Justin Taber centering the hulking James Keane and the highly skilled Zack Zaremba. Defense was thought to be the weak link of the team coming into the season with the loss of Puglisi and Clark Seymour. Former defenceman Gill addressed this area in spades. In addition to the return of incumbents like the steady Dylan Robichaud and Tyson Wilson and the return from injury of Alex Boak, Gill bolstered the ranks with rookie standout Sebastien Gingras (son of former NHL’er Gaston), brought the rugged local boy Nathan Livingstone home from the Smiths Falls Bears via trade and most recently traded for all-Star (and NHL watch list member) Scott Dawson from the Nepean Raiders. Mike Baird rounds out a fine defence corps. Goaltender Clark Saunders has rebounded back to all star form this season, leading the league in goals against average. He is ably backed up by recent addition Justin Gilbert.

So why am I writing all this? To get you in the community out there to support the local squad. While attendance has picked up in the last couple of months, the Memorial Center should be full for every home game. The coach and owner is a former NHL’er and local. The players are great, the ticket prices good, the venue is both raucous and intimate. What more could a fan ask for? If we gave the Braves the same community support as the Pembroke Lumber Kings receive, there is no reason this team could not contend and be an annual source of community excitement and pride.

Don’t take my word for it though. Go to a game, buy a program, purchase a 50/50 ticket, Chuck a Puck, groove to the music, familiarize yourself with the team and it’s players. As a relative newcomer to the Brockville area I was not even aware of the existence of the Braves until I’d lived here for nearly 2 years. Shame on me. You, like me and my family might find there is something very special in your very own town, right under your nose. And you didn’t even know it. Shame on you.

Now get out there and support the team the way they deserve to be supported. You certainly will not regret it.

Braves Bring Back Bird - January 13, 2010

The Brockville Braves who acquired Left Winger, Stephen Bird from the Kanata Stallions earlier this season for a 5th round pick in 2010, have added Stephen to their Active roster after sending Bird to Arnprior's Junior B squad for a conditioning stint. The Braves would like to welcome Stephen back to the Braves. Stephen played for the Braves last season before being moved to Kanata in the Shane Thompson deal.

Bird is a 6 foot 190lb Left Winger who plays within the Braves system very well. The Braves felt bringing Stephen back would provide a needed element for added depth as a role player. Stephen's experience and leadership will add to the Braves depth as they make their run to the 2010 Fred Page Cup.

Stephen, who is a native of Deep River ON will add to the Braves grit. He is a hard working player that knows his role on the team and plays it well. Stephen will wear # 27. Come out Friday night and welcome Stephen back to the Braves.

Braves Add Another Elite CJHL Defenseman - January 10, 2010

The Brockville Braves have acquired All-Star CJHL defenseman, Scott Dawson from the Nepean Raiders. In return the Braves sent their 2010 and 2011 1st round draft selection. The Braves would like to welcome Scott to the team.

Dawson a 6 foot 4 inch 210lb D man who has been a CJHL All-Star for two straight seasons as well as a member of Team Canada East for the past two World Junior A Challenges. Scott was the Captain of the Radiers and is on the NHL Central Scouting List. His experience and leadership will add to the Braves depth as they make their run to the Fred Page Cup.

Scott is a native of Kanata ON will add to the Braves size and skill on the back end. He is capable of running a power play and killing penalties, as well as shutting down opposing teams top lines. Scott will wear # 20 and be in the line-up this Friday at the Madhouse on Magedoma. So come out and welcome Scott to the Braves

The CJHL Weekly Top 20 Rankings are released every Monday by the Canadian Junior Hockey League and NHL Central Scouting. Through the use of a complex formula they determine the Top 20 tems in the nation and produce a weekly list. Showing up at number ten on the list this is the first time since their streak began that your Braves have been ranked though they have received Honourable Mention a number of times this season. A nice gift as the Braves head home for the Christmas Break!

Braves Set CJHL Record with 19th Straight Win - December 16, 2009

Braves beat Hawks 11-0 to break 36 year-old Record!!

Congratulations to your CJHL Record holding Brockville Braves. Last night in the buzzing confines of the Memorial Centre the Braves played hard and destroyed the visiting Hawkesbury Hawks 11-0. The Braves haven't lost since they dropped a game in OT to the Carleton Place Canadians on Oct 27. Last night's win breaks a record held by the 1978-79 Nepean Raiders and the 1972-73 Pembroke Lumber Kings.

Unstoppable Mark Williamson maintained his own streak of 17 games with a point by compiling a five-point night including one goal and four assists. This streak is more impressive when you consider both of his linemates have missed multiple games.

NHL Alumni in the Madhouse as Braves attempt to Break Record
December 16, 2009

Come to the Memorial Centre for Wednesday's game and you could see history in the making!

If the Braves win Wednesday it would be their 19th consecutive win, a CJHL record! The city of Brockville is buzzing and bleeding Braves fever right now and you could be part of it all. As a bonus former NHLer Gaston Gingras, father of stellar Braves defenseman Sebastien Gingras, will be attending this milestone game for your Braves. Gaston played in the NHL for 10 years for Montreal, Toronto and St. Louis and won the Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1985-86. He will be signing player cards and participating in the ceremonial puck drop.

Make sure you are there for the excitement, prizes and what promises to be a madhouse on Magedoma! Tell everyone you know and lets fill the rink to capacity!

Dumond and Roy Shine at Prospects Game - December 10, 2009

The Brockville Braves would like to Congratulate David Roy and Max Dumond for their outstanding performance at the Canadian Junior Hockey League/NHL Central Scouting Prospects game in Winkler MB. Roy and Dumond played in two games for Team East and ended up going 1-1 against Team West. Dumond scored the insurance goal in Team East's 2-0 win in the second game on Wednesday.

Congratulations Max and David, you did a great job representing the Braves and the CJHL!

Braves 15th win in a row part of a record breaking season
December 8, 2009

The Brockville Braves began this relentless streak on the CJHL back on October 30th, and they haven’t looked back. The Braves started the season with 4 wins and 4 losses in their first 8 games, since the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde start the Braves have not allowed the nice Mr. Hyde back into the rink. The Braves, who boast the longest winning streak in the CJHL this season have also broken franchise records for most consecutive wins in a season, most consecutive road wins in a season and most consecutive games without a loss. The Braves are now eyeing up the Franchise record for most consecutive home wins. Since the Braves 4 and 4 start they have compiled a record of 22 wins 1 regulation loss and 1 overtime loss.

Adversity:

  • The Brockville Braves have accomplished these mid season achievements without Head Coach/GM Todd Gill, David Roy, Sebastien Gingras for 6 games as the threesome were representing their country in Summerside PEI at the World Junior 'A' Challenge.
  • Second year Brave Tyson Wilson has been sidelined since mid October with a nagging elbow injury. Wilson showed signs last year of stepping up his game and blossoming into a legitimate CJHL All Star defenseman, expected him back early in the New Year.
  • Defensive specialist Dylan Robichaud, an anchor on the Braves blue line, was absent for 3 games with a nagging injury however he is back and playing great.
  • Captain Shayne Thompson missed the last three games with an upper body injury, which the team felt would be better served by sitting out. He will likely return to action on Wednesday in Ottawa.
  • Sunday the team awoke to the news that Shayne Stockton would be lost to the team for an undetermined amount of time due to a ankle injury suffered while taking part in the Saturday Night Youth program at the Brockville YMCA.
  • And on this coming Wednesday, both David Roy and Max Dumond will be in Winkler MA, playing in the NHL Prsopects game. Meanwhile their teammates will be in Ottawa taking on the Ottawa Jr Sens. As they once again prepare to deal with adversity.
All of this and the Braves just keep getting the job done. With a combination of great depth, team chemistry, the attitude that they won’t allow themselves to be beat, the high flying Braves continue to roll. Oh, and then there is the play of Clarke Saunders. Clarke’s stats are great, but they are also deceiving, he has no starts against the bottom three teams in the CJHL. He has yet to see the ice against Smiths Falls, Kanata or Hawkesbury. Even a couple of starts against each of these teams would give him more wins, would surely cut down his GAA and most certainly boost his save percentage.

Braves improvements:

  • 50 Points at the half way mark in the season. If this pace continues we can look for a 100 point season. They Braves sat at 38 points at this same time last year.
  • With a Winning percentage of .803 the team can be very proud.
  • This year the team has scored 151 goals while last year sat at 108. A remarkable improvement.
  • At the other end of the rink, last year the braves allowed 89 goals and this year a very stingy 83.

Just to Note:

  • 1. The Braves 15game winning streak is both the current and season best run in the CJHL.
  • 2. The Braves current 6 Home Wins are the best in the league.
  • 3. The team’s 9Road Wins are also the current best in the CJHL.
  • 4. And Mark Williamson’s 13game Point scoring Streak is something to talk about.

Can you say BRAVES FEVER?

Signs are up counting the streak at local businesses, players are being stopped on the streets by fans, congratulating them. With the Braves remarkable season and the Fred Page Cup coming to Brockville, the entire town is bleeding Red, Whiteand Black. A great year to be a Brockvillian. Not to mention the Braves have three players on the NHL watch list Dumond, Roy and Gingras.

Braves make Canadian Top 26 with 8 Straight and Not with Ten?
October 25, 2009

Canadian Junior 'A' Hockey LeagueLast week the Brockville Braves made the CJAHL (Canadian Junior A Hockey League) Top Teams List. After two more convincing wins they are now off the list WHY?

Your Brockville Braves were rated 26th out of 143 teams in the country last week. This week for some unknown reason the Braves are off the list after two convincing wins continuing their 10 game winning streak. The CJAHL consists of 11 leagues across Canada, 17 teams in the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League), 16 teams in the AJHL (Alberta Junior Hockey League), 12 teams in the SJHL (Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League), 11 teams in the MJHL (Manitoba Junior Hockey League), 6 teams in the SIJHL (Superior International Junior Hockey League), 8 teams in the NOJHL (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League), 15 teams in the OJAHL (Ontario Junior A Hockey League), 21 teams in the CCHL (Central Canadian Hockey League) 12 teams in the CJHL (Central Junior Hockey League), 14 teams in the LHJAAAQ (Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Quebec), and 11 teams in the MJAHL (Maritime Junior A Hockey League). With the Braves Hosting the 2010 Fred Page Cup "Big East" Eastern Canadian Championship you have the cjance to see your Brockville Braves (HOST), the CJHL Champion or finalist, the winner of the LHJAAAQ and the winner of the MJAHL, compete over 6 days in a round-robin format with the winner of this tournament going to Dauphin, Manitoba to play in the RBC (Royal Bank Cup) for the Canadian Championship in a 5 team round robin.

Reason to be excited? I would say living in Brockville and the surrounding area, not only are you going to be treated to an always exciting CJHL regular season and play-offs at the Madhouse on Magedoma. You have the opportunity to see your Brockville Braves compete against two other leagues to vye for Eastern Canadian Junior A Hockey supremacy first-hand. Described below is how the format works on the long journey to the RBC Canadian Championship.

The BCHL Champions take on the AJHL Champions Championships for the Doyle Cup and the title of Pacific Champion. The SJHL Champions take on the MJHL Champions for the Anavet Cup and the title of Western Champion. The SIJHL, NOJHL and OJHL Champions plus the Host Team battle it out for the Dudley Hewitt Cup and the title of Central Champion. LHJAAAQ, CJHL, and MJAHL Champions plus the Host Team Battle it out for the Fred Page Cup and the title of Eastern Champion. The Pacific, Western, Central and Eastern Champions, plus the Host Team, advance to the ultimate challenge to be the last team standing at the end of the road to the RBC Cup.

This is how the format works.

The Braves feel it is important for the great fans of Brockville to understand just how big an event the Fred Page Cup is and how much the Braves Staff and Players appreciate the tremendous support from the community. The Braves Fans are always the sixth attacker. To the greatest most passionate fans in the CJHL, thank-you for your support as we look for new fans to join in on Brockville's Friday Night tradition and be a part of this great journey.

What you have in your Brockville Braves is not only an outstanding on-ice product that as of lately has attracted 800 fans a game, enjoying the intense, relentless, exciting Braves style. The Braves possess the best home record in the CJHL thanks to you the fans.

You may not know what your Braves do off the ice. The Braves volunteer their time to Big Brothers, spending time with children in the community. On Saturday nights the Braves are at the YMCA for youth night, offering their time to organize activities for Brockville Youth, they are actively involved in Read with the Braves program in schools across Leeds and Grenville sharing the importance of education.

This is who your Braves are; not only are they an exciting group of 22 young hockey players but a group of 22 young men that are giving back to the community in many ways.

Another fact about your Braves you might not know? The Braves have combined hockey with education and graduated every single player to the NCAA or CIAU and OHL. This is an accomplishment that the Braves Staff are very proud of, as the Braves strive to continue this outstanding streak.

Thanks to the Fans of Brockville

One Braves Misfortune sends another to World Jr. A Challenge- October 25, 2009

Braves Defenceman - Sebastien Gingras will replace Tyson Wilson on Team Canada East.  Tyson is suffering from an upper body injury and will not be fit to play for 3-6 weeks.

Gingras, with his steadily improving play has earned a spot to represent his country along with Braves Head Coach/GM Todd Gill and teammate David Roy

Best of Luck and congratulations Sebastien.

Three Braves on NHL Central Scouting Early Watch List - October 23, 2009

The Braves lead all Jr A Teams in North America for players listed with NHL potential. Despite our league having just 12 teams, six CJHL players were recognized for their talent on the NHl's list, while several other players appear on various team lists.

The Braves that made the list were at the B-Level, David Roy and Sebastian Gingras (players with the potential of being selected in the 3rd to 5th round of the Draft) and at the C-Level, Maxime Dumond

Other CJHL players rated were Scott Dawson - Nepean Raiders, Dustin Darou - Smiths Falls Bears and Wyatt Galley - Nepean Raiders.

This shows how strong the CJHL is among all Jr. A leagues in North America.

Why not come out to see your Braves on Friday nights and watch the Stars of Tomorrow Shine Tonight.

Sebastian Gingras, David Roy and Maxime Dumond were all listed
on the Central Scouting Early list.

OH Canada East and the Braves - October 16, 2009

The Brockville Braves are proud to announce that not only will Braves Head Coach and GM Todd Gill be representing Team Canada East in Summerside PEI from October 28th until November 8th as Head Coach, he will also be joined by the Braves 18 year old local Defenceman Tyson Wilson and 17 year old Centerman David Roy in the WJAC.

Todd Gill - Head Coach of Team Canada East Braves Head Coach and GM was selected as Team Canada East's bench boss after a lengthy interview process which saw many great coaches across the Eastern part of Canada interviewed. There was little doubt that Gill would get this kind of opportunity after taking over the Braves in 2006. Since taking the team over Gill has comprised an impressive coaching record of 111-62-15(W-L-OTL). This includes two straight CJHL semi final appearances and a heart breaking game 7 loss to CJHL 3 peat champion Pembroke Lumber Kings and the 2007-08 CJHL Coach and GM of the Year award and being named Coach of the Battle of Ontario All Star Game.

Gill is a former 19 year NHL vet who played in 1007 Regular season NHL games as well as 103 Play-off games in 12 Play-off appearances.

Coach Gill will bring a demanding hard working style to Team Canada East as he expects nothing but the best from his players.

Way to go coach Gill and best of luck in Summerside.

Tyson Wilson - Team Canada East Defense

The Braves smooth skating Defenseman will represent Team Canada East. Wilson came up thought the ranks in the Rideau St.Lawrence Kings hockey system. After being selected by the Braves in the 2007 CJHL entry draft, Tyson came short of cracking the Braves veteran laden blue line and instead honed his skills in the EOJBHL loop with the South Grenville Rangers. With an impressive Rookie Junior B season and a summer with personal trainer Mike Whitford under his belt, Tyson impressed Braves coaching staff enough to offer him a regular spot on the Braves blue line in 2008. After fighting through a rocky start, while he was trying to figure out the much faster paced CJHL and learn how to play under the Braves relentless defensive system, Tyson found himself going from 5-6 minutes to top-four minutes including often playing with Ex Brave CJHL Defenseman of the year Paul Puglisi. Wilson’s game has steadily improved with Coach Gill’s advice of “less is often more” which has helped Tyson immensely. The Braves look for Tyson to anchor their blue line this season. Being selected to Team Canada East is just another feather in Wilson’s hat to go along with the many Div I NCAA schools that have been attracted to Tyson in the early part of this season.

Congrats Tyson represent your country well.

David Roy - Team Canada East Center

Brockville Braves Center David Roy, native of Cumberland Ontario has also been selected to represent Team Canada East. Roy is a 2008 1st round selection of the Brockville Braves and is a dominant forward who has seen some ups and downs in his young Junior Career. David was an OHL draft choice of the Sault Ste Marie Grey Hounds and was offered a roster spot this year but turned it down to pursue an NCAA scholarship. David had 21 points in 20 games last season winning rookie of the month for October and was well on his way to being a potential CJHL Rookie of the Year before being set back with a season ending sports hernia injury. David had surgery to repair the hernia and thenworked hard all summer as to prepare for the upcoming season. Unfortunately he then found out that he had a second sports hernia that also had to be operated on.

David is now back and at full strength, adding 3 points in his first two games back. He has already received a great deal of attention from NCAA Div I scouts, as well as calls from NHL scouts. David is an extremely intelligent young man and an absolute pleasure to have as a part of the Brockville Braves.

Congrats David represent your country well.

The Braves Players Fans and Staff wish the three of you the very best of luck. Go get em.

The Braves would also like to take this opportunity to wish the other CJHL players that will be representing Team Canada East. Pembroke Lumber Kings Kyle Just, and Ben Reinhardt, Nepean Raiders Scott Dawson and Andrew Calof, Cornwall Colts Jacob Laliberte and Smiths Falls Bears Jonathan Milley.

Best of Luck Boys go get GOLD.

Three Braves Selected in OHL Draft - May 6, 2009

The Braves would like to congratulate Maxime Dumond, Clark Seymour and Tanner Benton for their selection at the OHL Entry Draft.

Seymour, who stood out as a defensive fill-in for the Braves during the playoffs after a 4 game stint as an AP during the regular season was selected by the Kingston Frontenacs with the 2nd pick in Round 3(42nd overall). In an interview with the Recorder and Times Clark indicated he would prefer to stay with the Braves for a season to get stronger and develop further.

Dumond who played the whole season for the Braves would have likely been picked a lot higher in the Draft if he hadn't already made it clear he intends to work towards an NCAA scholarship after his time with the Braves. He was picked up in the 12th round 236th overall by the Ottawa 67's.

Tanner Benton who missed half of the season with the Upper Canada Cylcones due to injury, played two regular season games for the Braves last year and will be at the Braves Camp this July. Benton was selected in the 13th round 243rd overal by the Kitchener Rangers.

Congratulations Clark, Max and Tanner as you are in a select club of young hockey players whose skill level and work ethic stood out enough for the OHL to take notice.

Ayers helped lead the Spartans to an 11-2 victory over Tufts this past weekend. Ayers notched his first collegiate goal early in the second period, and followed it up with two more to earn the hat-trick.

Castleton is unbeaten in its last four games, going 2-0-2 over that stretch.

The Spartans remain unbeaten versus NESCAC opponents in 2009 in five games and are 4-1-2 this season, with their only loss coming to Bowdoin in early December. Castleton's 11-2 win over Tufts on Saturday was the second-largest margin of victory in program history, and the second largest scoring output, bested only by a 12-1 win over Cortland State during the 2006-07 season.

Braves have Great Day at Battle of Ontario - Jan. 18, 2009

Congratulations to Shayne and the rest of the All-stars, you made us proud.

Alumni Update - Jordan Cyr - Jan. 17, 2009

You have likely lost track of Jordan’s whereabouts since he left Brockville to go to RPI.

In 2007, Jordan transferred to Holy Cross from RPI after a coaching change. He had to redshirt last year.

This year, he is the leading scorer at Holy Cross, and one of the top goal scorers in Atlantic Hockey. The team is enjoying some success as well, which is most important. They recently tied Denver (fifth ranked in the country) at the Denver Cup, and lost by only a goal to BU in November. You can learn more about Jordan and the Holy Cross Crusaders at www.goholycross.com.

Jordan learned this week that he has been nominated as one of the 72 NCAA hockey players on the Hobey Baker fan ballot. He would love the support of Brockville fans. On-line voting is done at www.hobeybaker.com.

Braves pick up two at the deadline - Jan. 16, 2009

Slack Comes Home......
You may hear this in the summer as Nathan runs the bases and pounds out homeruns for the Bunnies (incidentally he did win the homerun derby in Hamilton last summer) at Bradfield Park. But this week at the trade deadline Nathan returned home. Overlooked by the Braves in his draft year, Nathan Slack was snapped up by Chris Byrnes for the Nepean Raiders. Since then Nathan has played regularly with both Cornwall Colts and more recently the Kanata Stallions. He made the Braves coaches look like geniuses as he scored the key first goal in his Braves debut Sunday in Smiths Falls. That combined with his punishing hits had the coaching
staff licking their lips and smiling. Coach Gill stated the trade of Slack for the crafty Sammy Coyne was for the purpose of adding much needed grit to the Braves roster. Sam also scored in his debut with Kanata.

The Braves are awaiting an Appeal to Hockey Canada for the transfer of Mike Miller from California (recently Detroit). Mike is a 17 year old defence prospect for the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL. He started the season with Mahoning Valley Phantoms in the NAHL, but an elbow injury kept him on the sidelines for 5 weeks, causing him to lose his spot in the lineup. Mike and the Braves are now at the mercy of HC in the appeal process.

Braves Asst. GM Whit Prophet and Owner/GM/Head Coach Todd Gill announcing the
2010 Fred Page Cup

The Brockville Braves of the CJHL have received the ODHA approval to host the 2010 Fred Page Cup, bringing together in this city; the CJHL Champions, the Quebec Junior A Champions and the Maritime Junior Hockey League Champions.

Hosting the Fred Page Cup will add substance to both the concept of Sport Tourism and that of a "Community" event. Not only will the Fred Page Cup be an economic shot in the arm for Brockville but it will bring the best Junior "A" hockey in Canada here for those five days in April 2010. It will give the entire community of Brockville and area, from our fledgling "initiation" players right through to our seniors, the opportunity to experience firsthand the battle for the right to compete in the Royal Bank Cup, symbolic of Canadian Junior A hockey supremacy.

Norm Saunders, who successfully presented our bid to the CJHL Governors a week ago has stated, "This is a community event and we will once again demonstrate to all of Eastern Canada, the kind of host city Brockville and it's citizens are."

Baby Braves Continue to Impress- Sept. 5, 2008

While the "Baby Braves" ( four (4) sixteen year olds in a rookie laden lineup) continue to play with confidence and enthusiasm, elder statesman Mike Byrd was not taking a backseat to anyone. Mike led the Braves to a deceptively close 5 - 4 win over the Cornwall Colts last night with a 4 point night.

With an emphasis on youth, the Braves will ice without a doubt the youngest team in the CJHL. But dont let the youth movement fool you, these guys mean business! The sixteen year olds all played a critical role in last night's victory.

Leading the contingent of youngsters was goaltender Matt Jenkins. Not withstanding a few ill timed deflections and a give away in their own zone, the Colts would have been fortunate to get a puck past Jenkins.

Up front , Max Dumond garnered 3 points with a goal and 2 assists. David Roy in his debut in a Brockville uniform picked up a pair of assists. Scott Sabourin, the other 16 year old continued with his crash and banging and proved to be very effective.

The Brave defence corps were forced to chip in with a pair of goals. Alex Boak ( Norwood NY) and lanky Dylan Robichaud ( Albany NY) each scored for the Braves.

Braves winning marker came of the stick of Columbus OH rookie Justin taber with Dumond and Byrd drawing assists.

The Braves released 3 players on the weekend, and with their one man wrecking crew, Scott Arnold, nursing an injury, the team played in Cornwall last night with a short bench. All likely candidates for call-up were also playing last night and thus unavailable.

The Colts come to Brockville tonight for a return engagement in the final preseason game at home for the Braves. Game time at the Memorial Centre is the traditional 7:30 PM.

David Roy arrives in Brockville! - Sept. 4, 2008

Fresh from his obligatory 48 hour stay in the Major Junior camp of the Soo Greyhounds, David Roy was on the ice with the Braves today (Tuesday). David was an 8th Round selection of the SSM Greyhounds of the OHL. In his release from the Greyhounds, The Soo general manager described Roy's camp as "outstanding. He'll go back and play tier II in Brockville, but we'd eventually like to sign him for next year." So fans, enjoy him while he's here!
